I loved this book, which is not my preferred genre. From the first page, Karen's writing style is very vivid; the descriptions of her characters so warm and real I felt like I knew them personally. Karen developed the plot slowly, but with a lot of intrigue - which kept me rivetted. It was easy for me to relate to the fantasy constructs in this storyline, being "fed" them in slow palatable bites with total internal consistency as the plot developed. Although Karen's storyline includes some details and technical aspects to round out the credibility of the narrative, she never bores the reader to show off her research work. Every word is valuable to this compelling story. The intrigue and the plot reached it's final crescendo on the last page, compelling the reader to continue the saga in books 2 and 3.
